What this site does with your data

Converting an image means sending it to our server, because that is the only way to support formats a browser cannot open. The file is held in the memory of the process doing the work, for the seconds the conversion takes. It is never written to disk, never copied anywhere else and never passed to a third party. Once the converted result has been sent back to you, the original is gone — there is no storage bucket, no queue and no database of submissions, so there is nothing to delete later and nothing that could leak. There is also no account system, so a file is never tied to a person.

As a side effect of re-encoding, camera metadata is not carried into the converted file: EXIF tags, including GPS coordinates and the camera serial number, are dropped. The one thing we read from them is the orientation flag, so that photographs taken sideways come out the right way up.

Your address and the abuse limit

Because converting costs us processor time, there are caps on how much one address may convert. To apply them we keep your IP address in the memory of the server, never in a database, together with a count of requests, of bytes and of files we could not read. An address that converts a great deal in one go is slowed down rather than cut off. An address that repeatedly sends files that are not images — the pattern of someone probing the converter rather than using it — is blocked, at first for fifteen minutes and for longer if it happens again, up to a day. Those counters are dropped once the period they cover has passed, and a restart of the server clears all of them. Beyond that, ordinary web server logs may record the page requested, the IP address, the time and the browser's user agent string, in the same way any website does — they exist to keep the site running and to spot abuse.

Analytics

If analytics are enabled, they are used to count page views and understand which converters are worth building next. They are never linked to the contents of what you convert. Analytics cookies are switched off until you accept them.
